SMP Frequently Asked Questions and Information

How does Scalp Micropigmentation work?
Scalp Micropigmentation has become such an effective hair loss solution for men and women because of its consistently natural and undetectable results. I pride myself on the ability to seamlessly replicate each individual hair follicle to create a perfect match for each client. Using cosmetic tattooing, I deposit tiny amounts of pigment into the scalp to replicate hair follicles. It is a completely natural, non invasive treatment that gives the appearance of tiny hairs growing out of the scalp that can completely restore the hairline and density to thinning hair. I do this using specialized needles, have a comprehensive understanding of depth, pigment colour, hair growth patterns and a highly trained skill set to ensure it looks natural and undetectable.
How many treatments should I expect? How long is each treatment?
SMP is performed over 3 visits and they average 2-4hrs for each session depending on the work involved. I build up density through the hair by depositing tiny impressions of ink (tattoo dots) into the scalp that mimic hair follicles until the desired result is achieved. It’s best to think of it as a ‘layering process’ where I go over the entire area each visit and build up the pigment by tattooing in between the existing hair follicles and the previous tattooed impressions.
How long in between each session?
The sessions are spaced 7 days to 2 weeks apart which gives the skin time to heal in between each session. This is important as it allows me to see the healed pigment in the skin and adjust the pigment shade if necessary.
Who is a candidate for SMP?
Almost anyone suffering from hair loss can benefit from SMP. This includes men or women who suffer from male or female pattern baldness (a.k.a. androgenetic alopecia), scarring, burns, birthmarks, or any other reasons for hair loss. SMP works for all ages, all skin types, and all skin colours. If your hair is thinning or receding, SMP will restore your hairline and thicken the appearance of your hair.
Most everyone is a suitable candidate but there are always a few reasons why we would be more cautious before we began any treatment. It is important to seek medical advice from your doctor if you have any concerns.
Here is a list of most contra-indications:
- Currently pregnancy, breast-feeding or planning
- Heart disorders
- Autoimmune diseases
- Active and inflamed eczema or psoriasis
- Type I diabetic
- Acute Keloid and hypertrophic scarring
- Taking blood thinning medication
- Accutane currently or in the last 6 months
- Hair transplant or major scars within 10-12 months
If you have had a hair transplant procedure, we need to allow at least 10-12 months for grafts to settle, grow and heal before treating this area. If you are using topical hair solutions or medications (Rogaine or Minoxidil), undergoing PRP therapy, needling or steroid injections to the scalp then I will explain how to continue therapy or strategize a timeframe in conjunction with Scalp Micropigmentation for men or women.
Can I get SMP if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?
Hard NO! Do not consider any SMP, tattoos or other treatments if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning. I’ll be here after or between children but I don’t mess with babies and nobody else should either.
Can Scalp Micropigmentation be use with long hair?
YES. This is a treatment I have also had myself and I have a special fondness for a hair density treatments. Scalp Micropigmentation is used to add density to thinning areas. I am able to add thickness to common areas like the temples, hairline, top and back crown, hair part and anywhere else!
Does it damage existing hair? Will it blend with my hair?
It will not damage your existing hair follicles as the depth of the needle only reaches up to 2mm into the dermis while follicles are found at 4-5mm.
When performing SMP we usually cover a much larger area than is currently needed. We have to consider the age of the client, hair loss pattern and the reason for hair loss to determine an area that allows for any future hair loss that may occur. We always fade out the tattoo into the existing hair to create a seamless blend.
What if I colour my hair?
I always match to the natural root of your hair while taking into consideration your current hair colour.. If you dye your hair the colour your hair before your first and last (3rd) session. Make sure you have washed your hair twice after colouring and before your appointment so the hair dye is no longer sitting on your scalp.
How long do the results last?
There are various factors that contribute to how well somebody holds their result. Factors that may contribute to faster fading results quicker include how fast your cellular metabolism fades the pigment, how much sun exposure, do you colour your hair, is your skin is oily, medications and other hair loss treatments combined with SMP. After completion of your last session you can expect the strength of the colour to last an average of 3-5 years. Over a longer term, you will gradually begin to notice slight lightening. When this occurs you can undergo a brief touch up session to restore any fading and secure a few more years.
How much is a touch up session?
Each situation varies depending how much pigment is left over and what is needed. Options for existing clients start at an hourly rate and if a full session is needed then the cost will average one of your original sessions. If you are a new client inquiring about a touch up session or an SMP correction then reach out to set up a consultation.
Is Scalp Micropigmentation permanent?
Scalp Micropigmentation is a form of permanent cosmetics or permanent makeup. Often referred to as a cosmetic hair or scalp tattoo, this treatment typically lasts 3-5 years and pigment can last for longer. After that time, a client may experience some slight fading and they can come back in for a quick touch up.
Will Scalp Micropigmentation work with grey hair?
It’s a beautiful blend with grey hair! The beauty of the scalp pigmentation treatment is that it will lighten over time. After your final session, you won’t need a touch up for 3-5 years. If you start to go grey/silver or lighten over that time period, when you come back for a touch up I can use a lighter tone and blend in with your existing SMP to match your new hair color. This gives the illusion of thicker hair just by adding colour to the root of grey hair.
How much does Scalp Micropigmentation cost?
It’s important to note that SMP pricing can vary widely depending on factors such as the experience of the artist, the location of the clinic, and the degree of hair loss and expected end result. Therefore, it’s important to not only consider pricing but also the reputation and quality of the SMP company or artist when making your decision.
Treatments can include hairline restoration, temple fill, back crown fill, hair transplant blend, density for thinning hair, scar camouflage, alopecia coverage and facial micropigmentation (FMP). Do I have to shave my head (male)?
Hairline Restoration- Bald Head
YES. Since I will be rebuilding your hairline and this requires tattooing outside of the existing hairs then a full shave will be required to maintain your new hairline to ensure a seamless blend with your remaining hair. The best length to keep your head shave is a zero or 0.5 guard.
Hair Density- Thinning Hair
NO. It is not required to shave your head for a density treatment and certain factors will need to be taken into considerations such as future hair loss. I do not tattoo beyond the the last hair along your hairline with density treatments unless I am are restoring a hairline then a shaved head will be required to maintain the look.
How do I choose a hairline?
Usually there are leftover indicators of where your hairline used to be and the shape of it. It can be helpful to bring in some pictures of the hairline you have had or ones you like and there is always the option to draw some hairlines on you. When choosing hairlines it is always best to play it safe, not going too low on the first session and allow some room for adjustments. I use classic barbering techniques to ensure your hairline will be in the correct place and suit you and your style.
Will Scalp Micropigmentation grow my hair back?
No, Scalp Micropigmentation treatment is a cosmetic tattoo with no claims to regrow hair.. However, SMP works by reducing of light on the scalp and gives the illusion of thicker hair or a fresh shaved look.
Can Scalp Micropigmentation camouflage my hair transplant grafts and FUT/ FUE scar?
Yes! By replicating tiny hair follicles inside the scarring and blending the colour around the scarring area, transplanted grafts and surgical scars can see massive improvement in concealment. If you have had a hair transplant procedure, we need to allow at least 10-12 months for grafts and donor area to settle, grow and heal before treating this area. Each case is individual so discussing this during the consultation will get the most out of your transplant procedure results.
Does the Scalp Micropigmentation procedure hurt?
For most clients, the pain is minimal and it’s considerably less painful than traditional tattoos. After your session, you won’t experience any discomfort. As for the hurt… it may depend on the nerves in your scalp and the “juiciness” (skin, nerves and connective tissue) of your scalp. Tylenol taken 20 mins before your treatment helps to alleviate some discomfort. Clients say it feels like a dull pencil tapping their skin. A traditional tattoo goes in up to 4mm in depth while we go 1-2mm.

Do I need to take time off work? Healing time?
Scalp Micropigmentation is non-invasive and requires no down time. In almost all situations, you will not need to take any extended time away from work, school, or other functions. After treatment it is common to notice slight redness and/or tenderness on the scalp for up to 1 day after your treatment. This usually subsides quickly and clients return to work and life that day without any discomfort.
For best results you would need the treatment to dry heal for 4 days after each treatment. This means avoiding sweat, water and any sorts of creams, lotions etc.
After this period you can slowly increase activity and resume washing your hair.

The treatment is perfectly safe, I use sterile equipment and brand new packaged needles for every procedure. I take health & safety very seriously and are fully insured and healthy board regulated.

SMP Consultations are free and are approximately 20 minutes. The consultation will cover the SMP process, clarify expectations, quoting pricing and general information for women and men looking to learn about how Scalp Micropigmentation can benefit them and offer options to their hair loss.
