Inkling Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) Preparation & Aftercare Guide

Proper preparation and diligent aftercare are critical to achieving hyper-realistic, long-lasting Scalp Micropigmentation results. Because SMP involves depositing specialized pigment into the upper dermal layer of the scalp, your skin needs time to heal and lock in each micro-impression.

Following this comprehensive guide ensures maximum pigment retention, smooth healing, and an undetectable finish.

Pre-Treatment Preparation: Preparing for Your Session

Taking these essential steps before your appointment ensures your scalp is in prime condition for optimal pigment insertion:

  • Hair Prepping & Shaving:
    • For Hairline Reconstruction (Shaved Look): Men restoring a shaved hairline should clip or shave their head the day before or the morning of treatment using a 0 to 0.5 guard (or a foil shaver, as advised during your consultation).
    • For Hair Density (Thinning Hair): Men and women maintaining longer hair should thoroughly wash their hair the evening before or the morning of their appointment.
  • Hair Coloring & Dye Rules: If you regularly dye your hair, color it one week prior to your first and final (third) sessions. Wash your hair at least twice after coloring to ensure no excess topical dye remains on the scalp.
  • Nutrition & Comfort: Treatment sessions average 2 to 4 hours. Enjoy a meal and stay hydrated beforehand, as food and drinks (other than water) are not permitted in the clinical procedure room.
  • Medication & Topical Regimens:
    • Finasteride (Propecia): Oral hair loss medications can be continued without interruption throughout your SMP treatment.
    • Topical Minoxidil (Rogaine): Stop using topical Minoxidil at least 3 days prior to your session and pause for 30 days post-treatment. The harsh chemicals and alcohol bases in topical hair growth solutions can disrupt pigment settling and compromise healing.

Post-Treatment Aftercare Timeline

Days 1 to 3: The Critical Dry-Heal Phase

During the first 3 days, your scalp is actively forming tiny protective micro-crusts over each impression. Keep the scalp clean, dry, and untouched.

  • No Water or Washing: Avoid washing your head or letting water touch your scalp in the shower unless otherwise instructed from your artist.
  • Avoid Excessive Sweating: 3 solid days. Refrain from heavy workouts, cardio, saunas, steam rooms, or direct heat that induces sweating. Light daily activities are fine, but keep physical exertion to a minimum.
  • Zero Touching or Scratching: Mild redness, tightness, or slight itching is completely normal. Do not scratch, pick, or rub the scalp. A soft, clean, non-restrictive hat may be worn loosely if needed.
  • No Products or Shaving: Do not apply medicated moisturizers, ointments, sunscreen, or topical solutions. Do not shave or cut your hair during this window.

Days 4 to 7: Gradual Routine Resumption

Your scalp skin is settling and recovering, though subtle peeling or light flaking may begin as micro-scabs naturally shed.

  • Gentle Washing & Hydration: You may resume washing your hair and scalp using warm water and a gentle, sulfate-free, fragrance-free cleanser. After washing, apply a light layer of fragrance-free moisturizer to soothe dry skin.
  • Clipping & Hair Maintenance: Gentle hair trimming with clippers or an electric shaver is advised the night before a scheduled treatment or permitted after Day 5-7. Exercise caution around treated zones and do not shave down to raw skin if flaking is active.
  • No Harsh Chemicals or Irritants: Avoid hair growth products, medicated shampoos, and microneedling treatments for at least 30 days post-session.
  • Protect from Sun Exposure: Keep your scalp shaded from direct sunlight. Do not apply sunscreen until all micro-peeling has completely resolved (typically after Day 4-5).

Long-Term SMP Maintenance & Pigment Protection

To protect your investment and keep your follicle replication sharp for 3 to 5 years:

  • UV & Sun Protection: Sun exposure is the primary cause of premature pigment fading. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30–50 sunscreen daily whenever you are outdoors.
  • Chlorine & Saltwater Caution: Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, and ocean water for at least 15 days post-treatment to protect healing tissue from chemical bleaching or irritation.
  • Daily Scalp Care: Maintain regular scalp hygiene and hydration to support healthy skin cell turnover.
  • Touch-Ups & Refreshers: Over time, natural cellular metabolism will gently soften pigment definition. A brief single-session touch-up every 2 to 5 years will restore full depth, contrast, and sharp detail.
